Stonewall landed like a pebble with a per screen average of $871 on 129 screens.  Meanwhile another art house release Goodnight Mommy the horror thriller from Austria expanded to 28 screens bringing in $108,344.  The movie is on its 3rd week of release with a total of $280,257.  Goodnight Mommy had a per screen average of $3,869 outpacing Stonewall.  This will probably hurt Stonewall’s chances of expanding its screen count next weekend.  With Halloween approaching and the beginning of the fall movie season Stonewall will probably be gone from theaters by mid October.  Stonewall has been mired by controversy since its first trailer was released with a white male as the protagonist.  Many have considered this revisionist history and called for boycotting the film before its release.  Director Roland Emmerich defended his choice of a straight acting white male lead stating he didn’t make this movie for a gay audience. He claimed it wouldn’t appeal to Middle America having an ethnic lead.  With a 9% rotten rating on Rotten Tomatoes the movie was not a critical darling mostly due to the poor direction, acting and script.  Other gay themed films opening this fall are Freeheld, The Danish Girl and Carol all featuring stellar casts ripe for Oscar nominations.
