Day 12: The Poughkeepsie Tapes directed by John Erick Dowdle The trailer for this movie played before The Mist in 2007. I remember thinking it was very creepy and unsettling. Being a horror fan I was looking forward to it. The release date drew close when it was removed from the schedule. It has since then lingered in oblivion. There were other release dates given but nothing came to fruition. It surfaced in 2014 on VOD for a few days only to dissappear. The Dowdle Brothers have worked on other projects since the completion of the Poughkeepsie Tapes. No explanation has been given as to why it remains locked away. You would assume it has to be a pretty disturbing movie or an awful mess that it doesn't warrant a release. Other movies have also suffered this fate. One of them being the overtly hyped All The Boys Love Mandy Lane. It finally got a formal release many years after it had played several festivals. The Poughkeepsie Tapes is an unsettling movie. It plays out as a documentary about a serial killer that had recorded the numerous murders he committed. 800 tapes were found all in chronological order. The killer choses his victims carefully. He stalks them ultimately taking them to his chamber of torture. He becomes fixated on a young woman that he kidnaps. She becomes his slave and eventually is forced to participate in his crimes. The gore is not much to consider it torture porn but it's suggestive enough to make it pretty disturbing. The killer is relentless and unsympathetic. The movie makes the incidents seem realistic making it quite visceral and disturbing. Serial killers are real boogeymen. They don't haunt our dreams, they are part of reality.
