The Exorcist (1973) directed by William Friedkin starring Ellen Burstyn, Jason Miller, Max von Sydow, Lee J. Cobb and Linda Blair
Based on the novel by William Peter Blatty The Exorcist is the 2nd highest grossing horror movie of all time. It is has grossed over $922 million adjusted for inflation ranked #9 on the overall list. Released the day after Christmas in 1973 The Exorcist reportedly caused people to faint and made some ill. Such sensationalism would bolster strong word of mouth. Were people really shocked at what was presented on screen? How could a movie create such reactions?
Nothing could prepare the masses for what they would endure. The story revolves around a young girl who suddenly begins to behave erratically. Her mother has taken her to several doctors that have conducted tests only to determine there is nothing physically wrong with her. It is suggested that it could be a psychological issue. One of the doctors suggests an exorcism. As the daughter's disturbing behaviour elevates she contacts a priest to help her. He assesses the young girl only to conclude that she needs psychiatric help. It is not until he is shown messages coming from her through words on her stomach that he agrees to take the case to the church. The exorcism is approved and a prominent priest is called to conduct it.
The movie has several storylines that drive it with the exorcism being the culmination. Questions of faith, family and death are raised. What would you do to save a loved one? What do you believe in?
William Friedkin has stated that he doesn't consider The Exorcist a horror film. It's a drama with elements of horror. This could be true since most of the characters are dealing with there own personal turmoil. But the imagery is terrifying. It deserves the title of the best horror movie of all time.
